Weather in May
May is the handover month. The dry season is still running in the north and on the Pacific coast, while the highlands and the Caribbean edge toward the wet season. Expect hot, sunny mornings almost everywhere and a growing chance of an afternoon downpour in the last ten days of the month.
The Yucatán and Caribbean coast are the hardest: humid, sticky and hot, with Mérida regularly above 40 °C in April and May. Cancún and Tulum are milder on the water but still humid, and the sea is warm enough for long swims. Sargassum seaweed starts arriving on Caribbean beaches from around April and builds through the summer.
In the central highlands — Mexico City, Puebla, Oaxaca, Guanajuato — days are warm and pleasant, nights cool. Afternoon storms begin late in the month, usually short and heavy. Air quality in Mexico City is at its worst from February to May, so travellers with asthma or young children should plan around it.
The Pacific coast (Puerto Vallarta, Oaxaca coast, Los Cabos) is dry and hot, and the north and Baja are at their best: warm days, cool nights, clear desert skies. Copper Canyon is comfortable before the summer heat.

Crowds and prices
May sits between the winter high season and the summer holidays, so crowds drop to medium and prices follow. Beach hotels in Cancún and Los Cabos are cheaper than in January to April, and Mexico City hotels are easier to book than during Semana Santa.
Two things push prices back up. The 1 May Labour Day long weekend fills domestic beach destinations for a few days, and the last week of May brings the first US summer-break travellers. Book the first half of the month for the best combination of dry weather and shoulder-season rates.
Domestic flights and buses are less crowded than in April, but the rainy season from June means some Pacific coast beach towns start closing smaller hotels and restaurants from late May.

What's on in May
May is a quiet month for big national festivals, which is part of its appeal. The main fixed date is Labour Day on 1 May, a public holiday when banks and offices close and domestic beach towns get busy for the long weekend.
Cinco de Mayo on 5 May is a bigger event in the United States than in Mexico; in Puebla it marks the 1862 Battle of Puebla with a parade and civic events, and it is not a national public holiday.
Elsewhere, look for local ferias and religious fiestas rather than national ones: town patron-saint days, food and mezcal fairs, and the start of the charrería season in Guadalajara and the Bajío.

Where to go in May
Best bets are the Pacific coast and the north. Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlán, the Oaxaca coast and Los Cabos are dry and hot, with warm water and no rain. Baja California and Copper Canyon are at their most comfortable before summer heat arrives.
The central highlands still work well in the first half of the month: Mexico City, Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende, Puebla and Oaxaca give warm days, cool nights and manageable rain. Plan sightseeing for the morning and keep the afternoon flexible.
The Yucatán and Caribbean coast are the compromise. If you go, choose the coast over inland Mérida, start early, and treat the middle of the day as pool or siesta time. Check sargassum conditions before booking a beach hotel.
Skip or postpone: long inland Yucatán road trips, and Mexico City if you are sensitive to heat or smog.
What to pack
Pack for heat and for a sudden storm. Light, loose clothing in breathable fabrics, a hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen cover most days. Add a light rain shell or compact umbrella for the highlands and the Caribbean from mid-May.
Nights in the highlands are cool, so bring a light jacket or fleece for Mexico City, Oaxaca and Guanajuato. For the Yucatán, quick-dry clothing and sandals beat anything heavy. Reef-safe sunscreen is worth the extra cost if you plan to swim.

April is hotter and drier in the Yucatán and still busy with Semana Santa travel, but the Pacific coast is excellent. June brings the rainy season to the highlands, lower prices and the start of hurricane season on both coasts.
If your dates are flexible and you want the Caribbean at its best, aim for December to April. If you want the Pacific coast, May is the last reliable dry month before the rains.
