Mexico in March: what to expect

March is the last full month of Mexico's dry season, and it is one of the most reliable months for weather across the country. The central highlands — Mexico City, Puebla, Guanajuato, Oaxaca — see sunny days in the mid-20s °C and cool nights that still drop near 5–8 °C in the coldest spots. Rain is rare.

The Yucatán and the Caribbean coast are hot and humid, with daytime highs around 30–33 °C and warm nights. It is dry by local standards, though humidity makes it feel hotter. The Pacific coast is dry and warm, and the water is at its most comfortable of the year. The north and Baja are mild to cool, with desert nights still cold; Copper Canyon is at the start of its best season.

March is peak season on the coasts because of spring break, when North American university holidays push Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta to their fullest. Beach hotels and flights cost the most of the year in these areas, and the last two weeks are the busiest.

Inland, the picture is calmer. Mexico City, Oaxaca, Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende are busy but not overwhelmed, and prices are closer to normal. If you want beaches without the spring-break scene, look at the Oaxaca coast, Mazunte or the smaller Pacific towns, or travel in the first week of the month.

Book flights and beach accommodation several weeks ahead, especially for the second half of March. Buses on popular routes also fill around the Benito Juárez long weekend.

Carnival can fall in late February or early March (check dates). Where it lands in March, Veracruz and Mazatlán are the big ones, with parades, music and packed hotels.

Benito Juárez Day falls on the third Monday of March — a public holiday and a long weekend, with banks and some offices closed. Domestic travel picks up and buses fill.

Semana Santa (Easter week) sometimes begins in late March (check dates). It is Mexico's biggest travel week: beaches, buses and hotels fill, and offices close Thursday and Friday. If your trip overlaps, book everything in advance.

In Mexico City, jacaranda trees bloom through March, colouring streets and parks purple. It is one of the month's quiet pleasures.

The central highlands are at their best: Mexico City, Puebla, Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende and Oaxaca all offer warm, dry days and cold, clear nights. This is a good month for city walking, markets and archaeology.

On the Caribbean, Cancún, Tulum, Isla Mujeres and Bacalar are hot, dry and busy. If you want the Yucatán without the crowds, Mérida and the inland ruins are calmer, and sargassum seaweed usually has not arrived yet.

The Pacific coast is dry and warm, and whale watching off Baja and the Puerto Vallarta area runs until late March. Los Cabos is at peak price and crowd. The north and Copper Canyon are mild and quiet, and this is one of the two best windows of the year for the canyon.

Pack for two climates if you are combining the highlands and the coast. For the highlands: layers, a light jacket or fleece for cold nights, and sun protection — the altitude makes the sun strong. For the coast: light, breathable clothing, swimwear, sandals and a hat.

Bring reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent for humid areas, and a refillable water bottle. A light rain shell is useful for the Yucatán even in the dry season. Comfortable walking shoes matter for cobbled colonial towns and ruins.

February is similar to March but slightly cooler and less crowded on the coasts, with whale season in full swing. April turns hotter, Semana Santa usually falls in it, and the first sargassum can appear on Caribbean beaches. May is very hot in the Yucatán and smoggy in Mexico City, and the rains begin late in the month.

If you want dry weather with fewer spring-breakers, February or early March are the sweet spots. If you want the hottest beach weather and do not mind the heat, April works — but book around Semana Santa.
