The routes step by step
Seven days: land in Mexico City, take four nights in Roma, Condesa or the Centro Histórico, and use one full day for Teotihuacán. Fly to Oaxaca for three nights: Monte Albán in the morning, a mezcal village or a market day in the afternoon. This is the shortest route that still feels like two different Mexicos.
Ten days: fly into Cancún and leave the beach for the end. Bus or drive to Mérida for three nights (Uxmal, cenotes, Sunday market), Valladolid for two (Chichén Itzá at opening, more cenotes), then Bacalar or Tulum for four, and one last night near the Cancún airport. ADO buses, the Tren Maya or a rental car cover the hops; pay the VISITAX.
Fourteen days: the same two routes joined. Mexico City 4, Oaxaca 3, fly to Mérida 3, Valladolid 1, Tulum 3, fly home from Cancún. Oaxaca-Mérida flights often connect through Mexico City, so book the connection as one ticket if you can.
Twenty-one days: add Chiapas (San Cristóbal de las Casas and Palenque, 4-5 nights) after Oaxaca, or swap the Caribbean for the Pacific coast (Puerto Vallarta or La Paz and Los Cabos, 4-5 nights). Adding a third region means one more flight and one more travel day; do not add both.

Weather splits the country. The highlands and the Caribbean are best October to April; the Pacific coast is best November to April; the Yucatán can be hot and wet from May to October. Hurricane season on both coasts runs roughly June to November.
Altitude is real: Mexico City sits above 2,200 m, so give the first day to the city rather than a full-day tour. San Cristóbal and Oaxaca are also high.
