How to choose your dates
Start with the region, not the month. If you want the Caribbean beaches, aim for December to April; if you want the colonial highlands and archaeology, November to April gives dry, sunny days with cold nights. If your trip is fixed to summer, plan the highlands and accept afternoon rain, or pick Baja, where summer is hot but drier than the Caribbean.
Then check the calendar. Semana Santa (March or April, dates move) is Mexico's biggest domestic travel week: buses, beaches and hotels fill, and prices spike. The Christmas–New Year period does the same on the coasts. Día de Muertos (1–2 November) is the opposite problem: Oaxaca and Pátzcuaro sell out months ahead, so book early if that is the goal.
Finally, weigh cost against weather. June, September and October are the cheapest months because they are wet and, in September, at peak hurricane risk. If you travel then, buy flexible tickets, watch forecasts and keep a Plan B inland. November to April costs more but needs less contingency planning.

Altitude and temperature swing within a single day in the highlands. Mexico City, Puebla, Oaxaca and San Miguel de Allende sit around 2,000 m or higher, with mild days and cold nights from December to January. Pack layers rather than a heavy coat. Air quality in Mexico City is usually worst February to May.
Festivals and holidays move prices more than weather does in some weeks. Carnival (February or March, check dates) fills Veracruz and Mazatlán; Guelaguetza (late July, check dates) sells out Oaxaca; Independence Day (15–16 September) is a national party. Confirm dates each year before you commit.
