Mexico in June: what to expect

June is the first full month of the rainy season across most of Mexico. The pattern is usually the same: clear, sunny mornings, building cloud by early afternoon, then a heavy shower or thunderstorm that lasts an hour or two and clears for the evening. It rarely rains all day, but it can rain every day.

The highlands are the most comfortable place to be. Mexico City, Puebla, Oaxaca, Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende sit around 2,000 m and stay mild: daytime highs near the mid-20s °C, nights cool enough for a light jacket. The trade-off is the daily afternoon storm and the start of the wet-season green.

The coasts are a different story. The Yucatán and Caribbean coast (Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Mérida) are hot and humid, with highs in the low 30s °C and high humidity; Mérida is the hottest of the group. The Pacific coast (Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlán, the Oaxaca coast) turns wet, with heavy rain and the start of hurricane season. The north and Baja are hot and dry, with desert highs well into the 30s °C — this is not the month for Copper Canyon hiking.

June is one of the quietest months of the Mexican travel year. The Easter and summer-holiday peaks are behind and ahead of you, and the heat and rain keep domestic beach travel down. Hotel occupancy on the Caribbean and Pacific coasts drops sharply, and you can often book a room a few days ahead at a walk-up rate.

Prices follow. This is low season almost everywhere: 2026 estimate, beach hotels in Cancún or Puerto Vallarta commonly run 30–50% below their December–April rates, and flights from the US are usually cheaper than in July or August. Mexico City and the colonial highlands are less seasonal, but still softer than in winter.

The exception is the start of the month, when the last school groups and early-summer travellers are still moving. If you want the best combination of low prices and reasonable weather, aim for the first two weeks of June rather than the last.

June has no national holiday and no festival on the scale of Semana Santa or Día de Muertos, which is part of why it is quiet. What it does have is local and religious events, mostly in the first half of the month.

Corpus Christi falls in June (date moves with Easter; check). It is a public-ish observance in many towns, with processions and decorated churches, and it is a big deal in parts of Guanajuato and Puebla state. San Pedro and San Pablo (29 June) is the patron-saint feast for fishing towns and villages named for Saint Peter — expect processions, music and food in places like the Pacific coast fishing villages and small towns across the country.

In Mexico City, June is also Pride month, with a large march and festival at the end of the month (check the date), and the city's cultural calendar runs year-round. Beyond that, look for local ferias — town fairs are common in the highlands in the wet season, and they are small, cheap and worth a detour if you are already nearby.

The highlands are the safest bet. Mexico City, Oaxaca, Puebla, Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende give you mild days, cool nights and a storm you can plan around: do your walking, ruins and markets in the morning, be indoors or in a café by 3pm, and go out again for dinner. Oaxaca and the central highlands are the strongest picks for a first June trip.

On the Caribbean coast, June is a gamble. Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum are hot and humid, and sargassum seaweed is often thick on the beaches from April to September — some resorts clean their stretch daily, others do not. Check recent beach reports before you commit, and consider Isla Mujeres or Cozumel, where the water is usually clearer. Inland Yucatán (Mérida, Valladolid, the ruins) is hot but the rain is short.

The Pacific coast is wet and into storm season; if you go, keep plans flexible and watch forecasts. Baja and the north are hot and dry — fine for a beach town like La Paz or Loreto if you accept the heat, poor for desert hiking. If you want a low-cost, low-crowd June, pick one highland base and one short coastal add-on, not a multi-stop beach tour.

Pack for rain and for a big temperature swing in the highlands. A light waterproof shell or compact umbrella earns its place every afternoon; so does a warm layer for highland nights, which can drop to around 10 °C. Quick-dry clothing beats cotton on the humid coasts.

For the coasts, bring reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent (mosquitoes are more active in the wet season), and more than one swimsuit so one can dry while you wear the other. A dry bag or waterproof phone pouch is useful for boat days and sudden showers. If you are heading to the highlands, add comfortable walking shoes that can handle wet cobblestones.

May is hotter and drier in the highlands, with the rains only starting late in the month; it is a better weather month but busier and pricier. July brings the Guelaguetza festival in Oaxaca and the start of summer holiday crowds on the coasts, with similar afternoon storms. August is wetter and hotter, with hurricane risk rising.

If you want dry, reliable weather, the best time to visit Mexico is November to April. If you are set on June, go early in the month, base in the highlands, and treat any beach time as a bonus rather than the plan.
