Maldives itineraries: 1 week, 2 weeks and 3 weeks

Match the trip length to the number of bases, not the number of atolls on the map. Transfers are the fixed cost in time and money, so a 7-day trip with two islands spends a day of it in transit.

Nightly rates swing hard by season, island and room class, so treat any figure here as a starting point and price your own dates. The bands below are 2026 estimates per person per night, room only, and exclude seaplane, domestic flight and speedboat legs, which are charged separately.

The 7-day answer is a single base. Choose by what you want in the water: North or South Malé Atoll for speedboat transfers and surf, Ari for whale sharks and mantas, Baa for Hanifaru Bay. All three are reachable from Velana, but by different machines: speedboat, seaplane or domestic flight plus boat.

The one timing rule that changes plans: seaplanes fly in daylight only, and the same-day arrival cutoff is set by the operator. Land in the morning and you can often transfer the same day; land late and you sleep in Hulhumalé or Malé and fly out the next morning, which quietly costs you a resort night. Confirm the cutoff with your resort before you book the international flight.

Days then run themselves. Two boat excursions, a sandbank or island visit and a day doing nothing are a common shape, not a requirement; the only fixed point is the last morning, which ends early because your transfer leaves before your flight, not after it.

Ten days buys the classic split: 4 nights on a guesthouse island, then 5 nights at a resort, with 1 night in Hulhumalé at the end so the departure morning is calm. Maafushi is the busiest and easiest guesthouse base, with daily excursions; Thoddoo in Ari has a long bikini beach and a farming island feel.

On a local island you cover shoulders and knees away from the bikini beach, and alcohol is not sold. That is the trade for a much lower nightly rate. The resort half then works as a reward: pick one in Malé or Ari atoll so the transfer between the two halves is a single boat leg, not a loop back through Velana.

Allow a morning for the guesthouse-to-resort transfer. Speedboats often run on set schedules, so a 09:00 or 14:00 departure decides your day.

Two weeks lets you reach the south. The shape: Dhigurah in South Ari for whale-shark trips (4 nights), fly to Fuvahmulah for tiger-shark diving (4 nights), then a Malé Atoll resort (5 nights) and Hulhumalé (1). Fuvahmulah is a single-island atoll with its own airport, so a domestic flight replaces a long boat ride. Confirm that the Dhigurah–Fuvahmulah flight and the onward speedboat actually run on your dates before you fix the plan.

The alternative is a 7-night liveaboard, which covers several atolls and dive sites with no hotel moves at all. December–April gives the calmest seas for either version. If you dive, check that your last dive leaves at least 18–24 hours before your flight home; that constraint shapes the final two days more than anything else.

Domestic flights have baggage limits that are lower than international allowances, so pack a soft bag and check the limit before you book the internal leg.

Three weeks does not need a longer list of islands. The safer use of the extra week is longer stays on the same route, plus one extra base at most, because every additional atoll adds a flight or a long boat leg and a buffer night around it.

If you do add a base, pick it by season rather than by map. Baa Atoll's manta season at Hanifaru Bay runs May–November, while the Malé and Ari dry season is December–April, so the two do not fully overlap. Decide which one you are chasing before you fix dates. Addu in the far south is flat, linked by causeways and good by bicycle, but reaching it means another domestic flight; treat it as a separate trip unless you have confirmed connections.

Keep one unscheduled day per week. Weather, boat cancellations and dive limits will use it.

Every move between islands is a boat or a plane, and none of them run at night. A transfer that looks like 40 km on a map can be a half-day door to door once you count the wait.

Resort islands and local islands have different rules on dress and alcohol; the guesthouse half of a split trip is the stricter one. Carry small notes in Maldivian rufiyaa for ferries and local shops, and check the departure tax and any green tax position before you budget, as these change.
