Use this table to choose a base before you book flights. The transfer type decides how early your last day starts and how much of a short trip you lose to moving.

Step 1: decide resort or local island. A resort gives alcohol, bikini beaches everywhere and a speedboat or seaplane transfer. A local island such as Maafushi, Thoddoo, Dhigurah, Ukulhas or Rasdhoo gives guesthouse prices, public ferries and local dress rules on the village beach. This one choice sets your budget and your daily routine.

Step 2: match the atoll to what you want in the water. North and South Malé Atoll are closest to Velana airport, so transfers are short and cheap by Maldives standards. Ari Atoll is the whale-shark and manta area, with both seaplane resorts and guesthouse islands. Baa Atoll is the Hanifaru Bay manta season, roughly May–November. Fuvahmulah is a single-island atoll known for tiger-shark diving, and Addu is the southern, bike-friendly option.

Step 3: set nights by transfer, not by ambition. Three to four nights is the minimum worth a domestic flight or a long speedboat; four to seven nights suits a resort or a diving base. A 7-day trip is one resort. Ten days allows a local island plus a resort. Fourteen days allows two or three atolls, or a 7-night liveaboard instead.

Step 4: plan the edges. Malé is a half-day: fish market, Old Friday Mosque, National Museum. Hulhumalé, next to the airport, has a public beach and hotels for an arrival night. If your seaplane or domestic flight leaves early, sleep near Velana the night before rather than on a far atoll.

Transfers are the main cost and the main risk to a short trip. Seaplanes normally fly in daylight only, so a late arrival means a night near the airport first. Domestic flights and speedboats have their own timetables, and public ferries are cheapest but slowest and not daily on every route. Confirm the current schedule and price with your guesthouse or resort before you lock the international flight.

Local islands have dress and alcohol rules: cover up away from the designated bikini beach, and alcohol is not sold on local islands. Resorts are exempt. Guesthouses on local islands can arrange excursions, but group sizes and boat quality vary, so ask what is included.

Costs swing widely between guesthouses and resorts, and between peak December–April and the rest of the year. Check the cost and best-time pages before you commit, and check visa and entry rules for your passport. Travel insurance that covers diving and domestic flights is worth arranging early.
