Where to stay in Maldives: best areas and types of hotel

If you want the classic Maldives and have 4–7 nights, pick a resort in North or South Malé Atoll: the speedboat transfer is short, arrivals work at any hour, and you get the overwater or beach villa you came for. If budget matters, or you want village life and your own excursions, pick a guesthouse island such as Maafushi, Dhigurah, Ukulhas or Rasdhoo and accept the ferry or speedboat schedule, no alcohol and modest dress away from the bikini beach.

Choose Ari Atoll for whale sharks and mantas, Baa Atoll for Hanifaru Bay in May–November, and Fuvahmulah or Addu only if you are going for shark diving or a slow southern trip. Nights matter more than stars: under three nights, the transfer eats your holiday.

Entry rules are the same whoever you are: a free 30-day visa on arrival for all nationalities, with a confirmed booking and onward ticket. What changes by passport is how you get there and how much you pay for flights, not where you may sleep. Check your own visa page before booking.

Step 1: choose resort or local island. A resort is one island, one hotel, alcohol served, no dress code beyond swimwear at the pool, and transfers arranged by the hotel. A local island is a inhabited island with guesthouses, shops and ferries; alcohol is not sold, bikinis belong on designated beaches, and Friday midday prayers close businesses.

Step 2: choose the atoll by transfer, not by brochure. From Velana International, North and South Malé Atoll resorts are usually 15–60 minutes by speedboat. Ari Atoll is 25–40 minutes by seaplane or about 1.5 hours by speedboat to the nearest guesthouse islands (check). Baa Atoll is a seaplane or domestic flight plus boat, roughly 30–45 minutes flying (check). Addu and Fuvahmulah need a domestic flight of about 1.5 hours (check).

Step 3: match the island to what you want in the water. Ari Atoll for whale sharks and mantas, Baa Atoll for Hanifaru Bay, Fuvahmulah for tiger sharks, North and South Malé Atoll for surf breaks and easy logistics, Addu for cycling and a slower southern feel.

Step 4: check the transfer cost before you book. Seaplane transfers are commonly USD 400–700 return per person and only run in daylight; speedboat transfers are often USD 100–300 return (check). Some guesthouses include the ferry in the room rate, others charge separately.

Step 5: check the last-day timing. Seaplanes and domestic flights stop before dusk, so a late-night departure from Velana usually means a final night in Malé or Hulhumalé rather than on your resort island.

Step 6: book. For December–April and for any seaplane resort, 3–6 months ahead is normal; for guesthouses in low season, 1–2 months is often enough.

Resort pricing is rarely just the room. Most bills add a 10% service charge and a green tax per person per night, and transfers are usually charged separately. Ask for the total before you compare two hotels.

On local islands, alcohol is not available and swimwear is limited to designated bikini beaches; Friday is the quiet day, with shops shut around midday prayers. This is not a reason to skip them — it is the reason they cost a fraction of a resort.

Hulhumalé is a practical alternative to Malé for a first or last night: it is close to the airport, has more mid-range hotels and a beach, and avoids a taxi into the crowded capital. Malé itself is worth one night if you want the fish market and the old mosque.

Travel insurance should cover medical evacuation by air, since serious cases are flown to Malé or abroad. Check that your policy covers diving and any water sports you plan.
