Fly into Velana International Airport (MLE) next to Malé — it is the only international gateway for nearly all trips, and your resort or guesthouse transfer starts there. Arrive on a daytime flight if you can: seaplane transfers do not run after dark, so a late landing can cost you an extra night in Malé. 1. Book the international flight to Malé (MLE). Almost every traveller enters here. Gan (GAN) in Addu and Hanimaadhoo (HAQ) in the north take a limited number of regional flights, so they only make sense if your island is in those atolls.
2. Match your arrival time to your transfer. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, roughly 06:00–16:00, so a flight landing in the late afternoon or at night usually means a night in Malé or Hulhumalé before the onward hop. Speedboats run later but not all night, and public ferries keep daytime schedules and stop on Fridays.

4. Check the entry rules. Most nationalities get a free 30-day stamp on arrival, with a passport valid for the stay, an onward ticket and proof of accommodation or funds. Rules can change, so confirm on the official immigration site before you fly.
5. Sort the last mile. From Velana you either walk to the domestic terminal, take a boat from the airport marina, or cross to Malé by taxi or public ferry. Your resort or guesthouse normally meets you; give them your flight number in advance.
6. Plan the return. Seaplane and speedboat transfers back to the airport leave on fixed morning slots, so your departure flight may need to be in the afternoon or evening.

Notes
There is no land border. You cannot drive or take a train into the Maldives; every arrival is by air or by sea.
By sea, arrivals are cruise ships and liveaboard dive boats. There is no scheduled international passenger ferry, and private yachts must clear in at a port of entry.
Velana sits on its own island, Hulhulé, joined to Hulhumalé by road and linked to Malé by boat and taxi. Some travellers stay in Hulhumalé for a late arrival because it is close to the airport.
Friday is part of the Maldivian weekend, and Friday midday prayers close many shops on local islands. Public ferries also run reduced or no service on Fridays, which matters if you are island-hopping on a budget.
Baggage on seaplanes and domestic hops is limited and charged by weight above the allowance, so pack light if your route includes one.
Travel insurance is worth arranging before you fly: seaplane and speedboat transfers are weather-dependent, and delays can mean an unplanned night.
