Guadeloupe is an overseas department and region of France and part of the EU, but outside the Schengen area, so entry rules are set by France and can differ from mainland France. It is an archipelago: the butterfly-shaped main island (flat Grande-Terre and mountainous Basse-Terre) plus Les Saintes, Marie-Galante and La Désirade. Rent a car, split the stay between the two halves, and treat hurricane season (June–November) as the main planning constraint.

Etiquette

  • French is the official language and Creole is widely spoken; start every exchange with 'bonjour' or 'bonsoir'.
  • Beachwear is for the beach: cover up in towns and shops.
  • Shops often close for a long lunch and on Sunday afternoons.
