Grude

Skip Grude as a base: it is a 20-minute fuel-and-coffee stop on the M-6 between Mostar and the Croatian border, not a half-day.

Grude is a small Herzegovinian town of about 4,400 residents, 49 km from Mostar on the M-6 road to Ljubuški, Čapljina and Metković. It has no headline sight: travellers use it for fuel, a coffee or a bed on the way between Mostar, Međugorje and the coast. Plan on a short stop, not a stay.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Balkans ↗Mine-suspected land still exists in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in pockets of Croatia's former front line: outside towns keep to tarmac and waymarked paths, and treat red triangle signs and taped-off fields as absolute.
  • Balkans ↗Serbia refuses onward entry to travellers who reached Kosovo from a third country and then try to cross straight into Serbia; route Kosovo–Serbia legs through North Macedonia or Montenegro, or start the loop in Serbia.
  • Balkans ↗Hire cars need written permission from the rental company and valid insurance for every country on the line; Kosovo sells its own border insurance and some contracts exclude Albania, Kosovo or Bosnia outright.
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina ↗Bosnia and Herzegovina is outside the EU and Schengen area and sets its own entry rules; check the official requirements for your passport.
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina ↗Do not leave paved roads or marked trails in rural areas, and never enter damaged or abandoned buildings: landmine risk remains in places.
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina ↗Coastal Croatia and Montenegro connect by bus; allow extra time for border queues in summer.

Getting around

Road travel only. The M-6 links Grude with Ljubuški, Čapljina and Metković; regional roads R 420 (to Široki Brijeg and Mostar), R 421 (Sovići–Klobuk) and the Grude–Posušje road cover the rest. No published local bus timetable: drive, or take a taxi for short hops.

Pilgrimage town with Apparition Hill and St James' church; busy on feast days.

Široki Brijeg

caution

Door to door: About 20 min by car

Regional road R 420 north

A working town, not a sight; useful for fuel and a coffee on the way to Mostar.

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min by car

M-6 to Ljubuški, then the M-17 south to the coast

Bosnia's only coastal town; a swim stop rather than a day of sights.

Door to door: About 30 min by car plus border time

Watch out

Safety

Grude is a small, quiet town and street crime is rare. The real risks are on the road: the M-6 and the regional roads are two-lane, overtaking is common, and winter ice and summer tourist traffic both catch drivers out. Keep headlights on and carry your documents.
  • Mountain roads ice over in winter; drive with headlights on and keep documents in the car.
  • Fuel up here if you are heading to the Croatian border: stations thin out on the minor roads.
