Neum is Bosnia and Herzegovina's only coastal town, a 9 km strip of Adriatic wedged between two Croatian border posts. Since the Pelješac Bridge opened in 2022, through-traffic has dropped, so it now works as a low-cost beach resort rather than a transit bottleneck. Hotels are Tito-era concrete, prices are below Croatia's, and the sea is the same. Come for one or two nights of swimming and seafood, not for a sightseeing city.

Getting around

The strip is about 9 km from border to border and the town covers half of it. Terrain is steep, so walking between the highway and the shore takes effort; taxis are short hops and drivers usually take a €5 note. There is no bus station — buses stop on Highway 8 (Jadranska Magistrala) and timetables are approximate.

Watch out

Safety

Neum is a small, low-crime resort and safe for families; the real risks are summer heat, steep pavements and seafront restaurants that add charges — ask the total before you sit.
  • Two border crossings only for foreigners: Neum 1 (Klek) in the north-west and Neum 2 (Zaton Doli) in the south-east. The Imotica crossing is for locals and tourists are usually turned back.
  • Ask to be swiped into the system when you enter if you plan to stay, and swiped out when you leave, so your 90-day allowance is clear.
  • Renting a car in Croatia to cross into BiH usually triggers an extra cross-border charge for every day of the rental.
  • Your motor insurance must cover BiH; there are no facilities at the Neum borders to buy supplementary cover.
  • Mobile phones may latch onto a BiH network instead of Croatian; check before using data.
  • Some seafront restaurants add charges — ask the total before you sit.
