  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Balkans ↗Mine-suspected land still exists in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in pockets of Croatia's former front line: outside towns keep to tarmac and waymarked paths, and treat red triangle signs and taped-off fields as absolute.
  • Balkans ↗Serbia refuses onward entry to travellers who reached Kosovo from a third country and then try to cross straight into Serbia; route Kosovo–Serbia legs through North Macedonia or Montenegro, or start the loop in Serbia.
  • Balkans ↗Hire cars need written permission from the rental company and valid insurance for every country on the line; Kosovo sells its own border insurance and some contracts exclude Albania, Kosovo or Bosnia outright.
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina ↗Bosnia and Herzegovina is outside the EU and Schengen area and sets its own entry rules; check the official requirements for your passport.
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina ↗Do not leave paved roads or marked trails in rural areas, and never enter damaged or abandoned buildings: landmine risk remains in places.
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina ↗Coastal Croatia and Montenegro connect by bus; allow extra time for border queues in summer.

Herzegovina is the southern quarter of Bosnia and Herzegovina: the Neretva valley, a Mediterranean strip at Neum, and a border with Croatia and Montenegro. Mostar is the base — the old bridge, the bazaar, and the day loop to Blagaj, Počitelj and Kravice all start there. Trebinje is the quiet second base near Dubrovnik; Neum is the only sea. Two nights in Mostar covers the core; three lets you add Trebinje or the coast without rushing.

4 nights
Mostar 2 + Trebinje 1 + Neum 1, or Mostar 3 with a Međugorje half-day
  • Mostar's old bridge and the Kravice falls are the two busiest spots; arrive before 10:00 in July–August.
  • Kravice, Blagaj and Počitelj are hard to link by public bus — a car, a taxi day-hire or a tour is the practical option.
  • The Sarajevo–Mostar train runs a limited number of services; check the day's departures before you build a plan around it.
  • Summer heat in Mostar regularly tops 35 °C (95 °F); do the old town early and rest in the afternoon.
  • Crossing to Croatia or Montenegro means a border check — carry your passport and allow extra time in summer queues.

Blagaj, Počitelj and KraviceMostar300 minunknownThe classic loop; a car or a tour is easier than buses. Kravice falls are busiest 11:00–15:00 in July–August.
MeđugorjeMostar40 minunknownFrequent buses; check the last one back if you stay for the evening service.
NeumMostar120 minunknownBuses run via the coast road; a car is about 1 h 15.
TrebinjeMostar180 minunknownRoughly 2 h 30–3 h by road; the train line is scenic but slow and not always running — check before you plan around it.

Bags between cities

There is no scheduled luggage-forwarding service in Herzegovina; travellers with bags between Mostar, Sarajevo and Dubrovnik either carry them or leave them at the hotel between nights.
