Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory at the southern tip of Spain, small enough to walk. What breaks visits is the frontier: queues at the Spain–Gibraltar crossing can be long at peak times, and entry rules are set by Gibraltar, not by the UK or Spain. The Upper Rock and Main Street fill up when cruise ships are in.

  • Gibraltar sets its own entry rules; it is outside the Schengen area and the EU customs union. Check the Gibraltar government and your own government's advice for your passport.
  • The border with Spain is a controlled crossing. An EU–UK arrangement changing how it is managed has been negotiated; check the current procedure before you rely on past experience.
  • Leaving Gibraltar into Spain means re-entering the Schengen area; if your Schengen stay is limited, count the days.

Safety

  • Barbary macaques are wild: do not feed or touch them, and keep food and bags closed.
  • Upper Rock paths are steep and hot in summer; carry water.
  • Driving is on the right, unlike the UK; streets are narrow and parking scarce.
  • Check your own government's travel advice and the local emergency numbers before you go.

Gibraltar is a side trip from Andalusia; Tangier (Morocco) is across the strait by ferry from Spanish ports.
