How much does a trip to Ethiopia cost? Daily budget and prices

Ethiopia splits into two price worlds. Food, coffee and short rides cost very little; anything with a vehicle, a guide or a good bed costs a lot. That is why the daily totals below spread so wide.

The headline guidance is US$30–50 a day backpacking, US$90–160 mid-range and US$250+ for comfort, per person, excluding international flights. The component table below breaks those bands down and runs wider at the top end because it counts days with a private 4x4 and domestic flights; treat it as a 2026 estimate.

Hotels and tours often quote in US dollars, so you feel the exchange rate less on the big items. Local food, coffee and bajaj rides are paid in birr and are cheap by any Western standard.

Park and village fees are the least predictable line. Rates are set locally and change, and photography is often charged per shot on top of the entry fee — check the current figure where you are.

Build a trip budget from the daily bands rather than from a fixed package price: multiply the tier you will actually travel at by your number of days, then add domestic flights and any private vehicle days on top.

A 14-day mid-range trip at US$90–160 a day lands near US$1,300–2,200 on the ground, per person, before domestic flights. The same 14 days backpacking at US$30–50 a day is roughly US$400–700. Both are 2026 estimates and exclude international airfare.

The currency is the Ethiopian birr (ETB). It was floated in July 2024 and has moved a lot since, so any birr price you read online may be stale — check the current rate before you land.

Outside large hotels, cash is the norm. ATMs work in Addis Ababa and regional cities but are less reliable in small towns, so carry enough birr for a few days ahead. Visa cards are accepted more often than Mastercard (check).

Keep your bank exchange receipts: you need them to change leftover birr back when you leave. Telebirr and M-Pesa are the mobile wallets; visitors can open some wallets with a local SIM and passport (check).

Transport is the swing factor. A shared 4x4 with a driver runs US$120–200 a day, so two or three travellers splitting one vehicle cut the per-person cost sharply. A domestic flight at US$60–200 one way is often cheaper than the road once you count a wasted day.

Guides and scouts are a real line item in the Omo Valley and Bale Mountains, and they are usually required rather than optional. Budget them in rather than treating them as tips.

Food is where you save without trying: eating local keeps a day's meals under US$12. Alcohol and imported food in Addis hotels can cost more than a night's budget guesthouse.

One thing changes the numbers more than your spending style: the security situation in the historic north. The UK and US advise against all travel to Lalibela, Gondar, Axum and the Simien Mountains, and flights to Lalibela were suspended on 24 September 2026 (check the current advice before booking anything there). Building a trip around the north now means paying for plans you may not use.

Timing matters too. Room rates and vehicle availability tighten around major festivals, and the rainy months change what is reachable at all. Check the season against your route before you fix a budget.
