Ethiopia itineraries: 1 week, 2 weeks and 3 weeks

Pick your length first, then check the month and the money. The table below is the short version of the three plans further down.

This is the plan for a first trip with one week. Three nights in Addis Ababa covers the National Museum and Lucy, Merkato, Entoto and the coffee stops, with a day for Bishoftu's crater lakes if you want out of the city. Then fly Addis Ababa – Dire Dawa (about 1 hour) and drive roughly 1 hour to Harar, or take the railway one way if the timing suits. Three nights in Harar gives you the walled city, the markets and the nightly hyena feeding, plus a half day in Dire Dawa's old streets on the way back. Finish with one night in Addis before your international flight.

If you have only 5 days, cut Addis to 2 nights and Harar to 2; if you have 9, add a night in Harar and a night at Bishoftu on the way out.

Ten days lets you go south. Fly Addis Ababa – Arba Minch, then move by 4x4 with a driver and guide: Arba Minch (2 nights) for Lake Chamo crocodiles and the Dorze highlands, Konso (1 night) for the terraces and walled villages, Turmi (2 nights) and Jinka (2 nights) for the Omo Valley markets and Mago park. Fly back from Jinka (check schedules) and keep a night in Addis. Market days decide the order, so fix those dates before you book anything else.

This route needs a vehicle and a guide; it is not a self-drive trip. Budget for the 4x4, fuel, park fees and the guide as one package.

Two weeks combines the south loop with the east. Start with 2 nights in Addis, then Lake Langano (2 nights) for the Rift Valley lakes and birds, the Bale Mountains (3 nights) for Ethiopian wolves, nyala and cloud forest, and Hawassa (2 nights) for the lakeside fish market. Fly Hawassa – Addis, take a night in the capital, then fly Addis – Dire Dawa for 3 nights in Harar, and finish with a night in Addis. Bale nights drop below freezing, so pack a warm layer even in the dry season.

If you would rather not drive, swap the Langano–Bale–Hawassa leg for a shorter lakes loop and add a night in Harar.

Three weeks is the 14-day plan plus the Omo Valley, or the 10-day southern route slowed down with more Addis and Harar time. A workable shape: Addis (2) → Langano (2) → Bale (3) → Hawassa (2) → Arba Minch (2) → Konso (1) → Turmi (2) → Jinka (2) → Addis (1) → Harar (3) → Addis (1). That is 21 nights with almost no slack, so drop a Bale or Langano night if a flight moves.

At this length, consider hiring one vehicle and guide for the whole southern block instead of stitching together transfers.

The historic north is the big caveat. Lalibela, Gondar, Axum and the Simien Mountains are under advice against all travel from the UK and US, and flights to Lalibela were suspended on 24 September 2026. Check your own government's advice before booking anything in Amhara, and treat any north plan as provisional.

Altitude is the second thing. Addis sits around 2,300 m, and Bale goes higher; take the first day easy and drink more water than you think you need.
