Coolgardie

Stop 1–2 hours on the Great Eastern Highway: walk 500 m of Bayley St, see the cemetery, then sleep in Kalgoorlie 35 km (22 mi) east.

Coolgardie was the first big Western Australian gold-rush town, and what is left is a wide, quiet main street of old buildings with information boards. Almost everything a visitor wants sits along a 500 m stretch of Bayley St. There is no airport and no regular train, so you arrive by car, and most travellers use it as a break on the Perth–Kalgoorlie drive or as a half-day from Kalgoorlie.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

By car. Bayley St is unusually wide, so park once and walk the 500 m of sights rather than crossing back and forth. Fuel, food and phone coverage are limited in town; fill up and buy supplies in Kalgoorlie or Southern Cross.

Watch out

Safety

A small, quiet town and generally safe by day. The real risks are heat, long empty drives and mine ground: carry water, keep the tank topped up and stay out of fenced areas.
  • Summer days regularly pass 40 °C (104 °F): carry water and do the walk before 10:00.
  • Fuel and food options are thin; the nearest full services are in Kalgoorlie–Boulder.
  • Mobile coverage drops on the back roads to Burra Rock and Victoria Rock; a satellite phone or PLB is worth carrying off the highway.
  • Mine ground and old shafts sit close to town and to some roadside sights: stay on marked tracks and behind fences.
