Norseman
Stay one night, not two: fuel up, stock the esky and sleep before or after the Nullarbor crossing. Zero days if you are only passing through.
Norseman is a small goldfields town of about 580 people at the junction of the Coolgardie–Esperance Highway and the Eyre Highway, the western end of the Nullarbor crossing. Almost everyone arrives by car, and the town's job is to be the last well-stocked stop before 1,200 km of near-empty road east to South Australia. Treat it as a practical overnight, not a sightseeing base.

- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
- Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
- Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
- Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around
You need a car. The town is small enough to walk end to end in about 15 minutes, but the Eyre Highway junction, the roadhouses and Dundas are 2–20 km out. Fuel is the constraint: fill up here before heading east, and carry water. There is no public transport to or from Norseman.

Roberts Street and the town centre
The main street strip: motel, guesthouse, roadhouse and the pub within a few minutes' walk. Best if you want a bed and a meal without driving again.
Highway roadhouses on the town edge
Fuel, food and basic rooms right on the junction; convenient for a pre-dawn start on the Eyre Highway.

Watch out
Safety
- Distances are the risk: the next fuel east is hundreds of kilometres away, so leave with a full tank and spare water.
- Road trains and kangaroos at dawn and dusk on both highways; avoid driving those hours if you can.
- Summer heat is dangerous: 40 °C (104 °F)+ days, total fire bans and long stretches with no phone signal.Summer heat is dangerous: 104 °F (40 °C)+ days, total fire bans and long stretches with no phone signal.
- The Hyden–Norseman road west is unsealed and rough; check conditions before attempting it in any vehicle.
- Eyre Highway can close after flooding or fires; check the state road report before you commit to the crossing.
