Coolgardie
Stop 1–2 hours on the Great Eastern Highway: walk 500 m of Bayley St, see the cemetery, then sleep in Kalgoorlie 35 km east.
Coolgardie was the first big Western Australian gold-rush town, and what is left is a wide, quiet main street of old buildings with information boards. Almost everything a visitor wants sits along a 500 m stretch of Bayley St. There is no airport and no regular train, so you arrive by car, and most travellers use it as a break on the Perth–Kalgoorlie drive or as a half-day from Kalgoorlie.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer days regularly pass 40 °C: carry water and do the walk before 10:00.
- Fuel and food options are thin; the nearest full services are in Kalgoorlie–Boulder.
- Mobile coverage drops on the back roads to Burra Rock and Victoria Rock; a satellite phone or PLB is worth carrying off the highway.
- Mine ground and old shafts sit close to town and to some roadside sights: stay on marked tracks and behind fences.
A small, quiet town and generally safe by day. The real risks are heat, long empty drives and mine ground: carry water, keep the tank topped up and stay out of fenced areas.
