Central Ontario is cottage country: lakes, granite, pine and provincial parks on the southern edge of the Canadian Shield, 1.5–3 hours north of Toronto by car. It is a driving region — buses between towns are thin, so pick one base and day-trip from it. Muskoka for classic lake towns and boat cruises, the Kawarthas for the Trent-Severn Waterway and houseboats, Simcoe County for beaches and the 400 corridor, Haliburton for trails and quiet forest.
