The Kawarthas is a lake-and-river region 1–2 hours northeast of Toronto, spread across Peterborough County and the City of Kawartha Lakes. Public transport exists only in Peterborough and Lindsay, so a car decides what you can see. Pick one base — Peterborough for the lift lock and city services, Bobcaygeon or Fenelon Falls for the lock-side villages, Buckhorn/Lakefield for Stoney Lake and the petroglyphs — and day-trip the rest along Highway 28.
