The Federated States of Micronesia is four island states (Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, Kosrae) spread across some 2,700 km of ocean, each with its own customs, language and entry check. Flights are few: the United island-hopper links Guam, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae a few times a week, and Yap is reached from Guam or Palau. It is a sovereign country in free association with the United States and uses the US dollar; it is not US territory, so US entry rules do not apply.

  • Entry rules are set by the FSM government, and each state also checks arrivals: confirm the rules for your passport with FSM immigration or an FSM embassy before booking.
  • The Chuuk Lagoon wrecks are protected war graves and historic sites: removing anything is prohibited, and a dive permit is required.
  • Land and reefs are owned by families and clans: ask permission and pay fees to visit sites, beaches or villages, especially in Yap.

Etiquette

  • Dress modestly: in Yap and Chuuk especially, women should cover their thighs; swimwear only at resorts or on boats.
  • In Yap, carry a leaf or small item when walking through a village as a sign of good intent, and ask before entering any path or site.
  • Do not touch or photograph stone money without permission; it is owned property.

  • Currency is the US dollar (USD). Hotels and dive shops may take cards, often with a surcharge; everything else is cash.
  • ATMs are few and can run out of cash; bring enough US dollars for the whole stay.

Safety

  • Wreck diving in Chuuk is deep and technical: dive with an established operator and within your certification.
  • Medical care is limited and there are few decompression chambers; carry insurance with evacuation cover.
  • Alcohol-related trouble at night is the main street risk in Chuuk's Weno; stay in after dark.
  • Typhoons (mainly Jul–Nov) can cancel flights; follow local warnings.
  • Dengue occurs; use repellent.
