Transnistria is a breakaway region on the east bank of the Dniester. It is internationally recognised as part of Moldova but run by its own de facto authorities, with separate checkpoints, currency and mobile network. Consular help is very limited and several governments advise against all but essential travel. Plan it from Chișinău, keep it short and do not rely on cards or roaming.

  • Read your own government's travel advice for Moldova (which covers Transnistria) before booking; several governments advise against all but essential travel to the region.
  • Enter Moldova through a Moldovan-controlled crossing first (for example Chișinău airport); at the Transnistrian checkpoint you receive a local migration document that sets how long you may stay. Keep it until you leave.
  • Most embassies cannot provide normal consular help inside Transnistria; confirm your insurance covers the region.

Etiquette

  • Keep political opinions to yourself; do not argue about status or the conflict.
  • Russian is the most widely used language; a few words help.
  • Dress modestly in Orthodox churches.

  • The local currency is the Transnistrian ruble, used only there. Foreign cards generally do not work; bring cash (euros, US dollars or Moldovan lei) and exchange small amounts locally.
  • Change any leftover rubles back before leaving: they cannot be exchanged outside the region.

Safety

  • Several governments advise against all but essential travel to Transnistria; read your own government's Moldova advice first.
  • Consular assistance is very limited; tell someone your plans and return time.
  • Moldovan and foreign mobile roaming often does not work; download maps and keep key addresses offline.
  • Avoid photographing military sites, checkpoints, police or government buildings.
  • The region borders Ukraine; stay away from the border area.
