Treat Monaco as a day-trip from a base in Nice (or Menton): 20–30 minutes by regional train along the coast, half a day to a full day on foot, and sleep back in France.
Monaco is a city-state of about two square kilometres on the French Riviera, surrounded by France on three sides. There is no border control from France and no airport: you arrive through Nice Côte d'Azur and the coastal train or bus. Rooms are among the most expensive in Europe, which is why most visitors sleep in Nice. The traps are Grand Prix week, when streets close and prices jump, and steep streets between the districts: use the public lifts and escalators.

Country rules
- Monaco is not in the EU but is inside the Schengen area in practice through France: the French entry rules for your passport apply, and there are no border checks from France.
- The Monte-Carlo Casino gaming rooms admit adults only with a passport or ID; Monaco citizens may not gamble there, and dress rules apply in the evening.
- Do not walk around the town bare-chested or in swimwear away from the beach: local rules forbid it.
Etiquette
- Dress smartly for the casino and upscale restaurants in the evening.
- Cover shoulders in the cathedral; keep voices low.
- French is the official language; greet with bonjour.

Safety
- Monaco is very safe and heavily policed; normal care with bags on the crowded train from Nice.
- Check that your mobile plan covers Monaco: it has its own network, and EU roaming deals may not include it.
