Moldova is small and most sights are within two hours of Chișinău, so one base works. Minibuses (maxi-taxis) connect towns but rarely reach wineries, which usually need a tour or driver. The Transnistria region east of the Dniester is outside the control of the Moldovan government and has its own checkpoints and currency; plan it separately.

Etiquette

  • Romanian is the official language; Russian is widely spoken. A greeting in Romanian is appreciated.
  • Dress modestly in Orthodox churches and monasteries; women may be asked to cover their heads.
  • Hosts often offer wine or food: accept a little if you can, and pace yourself.

  • Currency is the Moldovan leu (MDL). Cards work in Chișinău hotels, supermarkets and many restaurants; minibuses, markets and villages are cash.
