Cyprus is a car island: land at Larnaca, give Nicosia two or three nights for the old town and the museum, and hire a car for the coast — and read the Green Line rules before you cross to the north.

Not field-verified

Cyprus is an island in the eastern Mediterranean, geographically in Asia and a member of the European Union. It is not in the Schengen area, so its entry rules are its own. Nicosia is the divided capital: a buffer zone runs through the old town, with crossing points for visitors. Public transport between towns is thin, so the trips that work hire a car or book transfers. Summer in Nicosia reaches 40°C. Check your own government's travel advice, especially for the north, before booking.

Routes that work

Nights per city

Nicosia, 3 nights

The coast is planned; Nicosia works on foot in the cool months, by car in summer.

  • Fly into Larnaca (LCA), 45 km and about 45 minutes from Nicosia; Paphos (PFO) is the second airport.
  • Arrive through Larnaca or Paphos: the Republic treats ports of entry in the north as illegal, so do not enter the island there.
  • Hire the car only for the days you leave Nicosia; the old town is walking and short taxis.
  • Avoid Orthodox Easter week and the August holiday peak unless you booked early: rooms and cars sell out.

Country rules

Inherited by every page below
  • Cyprus is in the EU but not in the Schengen area: a Schengen visa is not valid; check the entry rules for your nationality.
  • Crossing the Green Line: carry your passport, cross only at the official points, and do not photograph the buffer zone or soldiers. Check that your hire-car insurance covers the north.
  • Traffic drives on the left; hire-car roundabouts and junctions take practice.

Etiquette

  • Cover shoulders and knees in churches and monasteries; do not photograph during services.
  • Take shoes off before entering a mosque, and women carry a scarf; check whether a mosque admits visitors first.
  • Tipping of about 10% is usual in restaurants when service is not included.
  • Many small shops close for a few hours in the afternoon in summer.
Orthodox Easter week (moves yearly)
Many shops and museums close for days; the island travels.
Aug 15 (Assumption)
Public holiday in the peak of summer; rooms and cars sell out.
Oct 1 and Oct 28
Public holidays: Independence Day and Ochi Day.
Jul–Aug
Extreme inland heat; afternoons close down.

Money & passes

Cash necessity: 2/5

  • The euro (EUR) is used in the south; the north uses the Turkish lira, though euros are often taken.
  • Cards are widely accepted; carry small notes for kiosks, bakeries and taxis.
  • ATMs are common in towns; use bank ATMs.
  • Ride-hailing apps and licensed taxis are available in Nicosia; agree the fare or use the meter.

Safety

  • Check your own government's travel advice for Cyprus and for the north before you book; advice differs between the two.
  • Heat (July–August) reaches 38–40°C in Nicosia: no outdoor walking 12:00–16:30.
  • The buffer zone and military areas are marked: do not photograph them or enter.
  • Emergency: 112 (the EU number) works everywhere; 199 also reaches the emergency services.

Cyprus joins the eastern Mediterranean corridor (planned): Athens, Tel Aviv, Beirut and Cairo are short flights.
