Base 2 nights in Cotonou, then Ouidah (1–2) and Abomey (1–2), with Ganvié and Porto-Novo as day trips; keep to the south unless you have checked the latest advice for the north.

Not field-verified

Benin's south is compact: Cotonou, Ouidah, Porto-Novo, Ganvié and Abomey are within a few hours of each other. Trips break when they head north without checking advice: governments warn against travel to areas near the northern borders, including parts of the national parks. The rules that apply everywhere: hire a driver, travel in daylight, and use motorbike taxis only with a helmet or not at all.

Country rules

Inherited by every page below
  • Check visa and entry rules for your passport on official Beninese government sources; an e-visa exists for many nationalities.
  • Governments advise against travel to parts of northern Benin near the Burkina Faso and Niger borders, including areas around the national parks; check your own government's advice.
  • Vodun is a living religion: ask before photographing shrines and ceremonies, and follow your guide's instructions.

Etiquette

  • Greetings come first: say hello and ask how someone is before any question or purchase; skipping this is rude.
  • Use your right hand to give, receive and eat; the left hand is considered unclean.
  • Ask before photographing people, and do not photograph police, the military, airports or government buildings.
  • Dress modestly at shrines and in villages; your guide will tell you where shoes come off.
Vodun days (around Jan 10)
National holiday and ceremonies in Ouidah; hotels fill.
Main rainy season (about Apr–Jul)
Heavy rain and flooded roads in the south.

Money & passes

Cash necessity: 4/5

  • Currency is the West African CFA franc (XOF), shared with other West African states and pegged to the euro.
  • Mobile money is widely used by residents, but most visitors pay in cash; carry small notes, as change is often short.
  • Cards work in some Cotonou hotels and supermarkets; elsewhere, carry cash.

Safety

  • Motorbike taxis (zémidjans) are everywhere and accidents are common; use a car where you can.
  • Roads: travel in daylight and wear a seat belt.
  • Beaches have strong currents; swimming is often unsafe.
  • Emergency numbers vary and may not always connect: save your hotel's, driver's and insurer's numbers, and check your government's advice page.
  • Health: see a travel clinic well before you fly about vaccinations and malaria prevention, and check whether a yellow-fever vaccination certificate is required for your passport and route, including transits.

Benin sits between Togo and Nigeria on the coast road; Lomé is a few hours west.
