Zurich in May: what to expect

May is Zurich's transition month. The Plateau warms quickly once the last cold fronts pass, and by the end of the month you get long, bright evenings and outdoor café weather. The catch is variability: a single week can hold a 24 °C afternoon and a 9 °C rainy one, so pack layers rather than a single plan.

Rain arrives as showers and thunderstorms, often in the afternoon, rather than the multi-day grey of November. Mornings are usually the safer bet for the lake, Uetliberg or a day trip. The föhn wind can push temperatures up sharply for a day or two, then drop them back.

The mountains are a different story. May is the tail of the ski season and the start of the maintenance window: many cable cars and mountain railways in the Bernese Highlands, Valais and Engadin are shut, and high trails still hold snow. If a mountain day is the point of your trip, this is the month to skip.

May sits in the gap between Easter and the June reopening of the mountain lifts, and Zurich feels it. Hotel rates are the lowest of the spring, weekend trains and lake boats are easy to book, and the old town, Kunsthaus and Landesmuseum are comfortable rather than packed. This is one of the best-value months for a city stay in Switzerland.

The exceptions are the two long weekends around Ascension and Whit Monday. Those dates fill lake steamers, riverside restaurants and hotels in Zurich and Lucerne, and prices jump for the three or four nights around them. Book those weekends early or shift your stay by a few days.

Business travel keeps midweek city hotels busier than the tourist calendar suggests, so a Tuesday–Thursday stay can cost more than a weekend one. Compare both before booking.

May's fixed points are the public holidays rather than a single big festival. Ascension and Whit Monday give the city two long weekends, and Zurich fills with day-trippers heading for the lake, the vineyards and the mountains that are still open.

The month also brings the first proper outdoor season: lake boats run fuller schedules, the riverside bars along the Limmat open, and the city's green spaces — Platzspitz, the Chinese Garden, the Uetliberg woods — are at their best. Confirm any specific event dates locally before you build a trip around them.

Stay low and stay in the city. Zurich itself is the strongest card this month: the old town, the lake promenade, the Kunsthaus, the Landesmuseum and the Uetliberg viewpoint all work well in changeable weather, and a boat to Rapperswil or a train to Winterthur, Baden or Schaffhausen makes an easy day out.

For mountains, pick low ones. Uetliberg is on the doorstep; Rigi, Stanserhorn and Pilatus usually run from spring, but check each lift's opening dates because May is peak maintenance season. Save the high Alps — Zermatt, the Bernese Highlands, the Engadin — for June onwards, when the lifts reopen and the snowline retreats.

If you want guaranteed sun, Ticino is the reliable choice: Lugano and Locarno are about two hours from Zurich through the Gotthard base tunnel and are the warmest, greenest corner of the country in May.

Pack for two seasons in one week. A light waterproof shell and a compact umbrella earn their place; so do a warm mid-layer and a scarf for cool evenings and boat decks. Comfortable walking shoes handle cobbles and wet paths better than sandals, and sunglasses are worth carrying for the bright spells between showers.

Add a refillable bottle — Zurich's fountains are drinkable — and a swimsuit only if you are serious about cold water. For mountain days, bring a warmer layer than the city forecast suggests: it is 5–10 °C cooler at altitude and windier on any summit.

April is cooler and wetter, with the ski season ending after Easter and Sechseläuten in Zurich. June is the better month overall: the lifts reopen, the wildflowers come out and the weather settles, at the cost of medium crowds and prices. July is peak season — warm, busy and expensive, with lake swimming and long evenings.

If your priority is the city rather than the mountains, May gives you most of June's comfort at lower prices and with far fewer people. If your priority is hiking or a high-Alpine resort, wait for June.
