Zurich in April: what to expect

April is Zurich's changeable month. The Plateau is warming up but not yet settled: expect mild afternoons, cold mornings, and spells of rain that can last a day or two. Snow in the city is rare by April, but a cold front can still drop the temperature close to freezing at night, and Föhn winds can push a single afternoon to 20 °C or more.

Daylight is generous — roughly 13.5 hours by mid-month — which is the real advantage of April over March. It is enough for a long walk along the lake after work, a Uetliberg climb, or a day trip that returns after 19:00 in daylight.

The mountains are a different story. Ski areas in the Bernese Alps and Valais often stay open into mid-April, and high resorts keep snow into the month, but low and mid-altitude hiking trails are usually still wet, muddy or snow-covered. If your plan is hiking, April is early.

April sits in the low season for Zurich. Hotel rates are well below the June–September peak and below the Christmas market weeks, and you can usually book a city-centre room at short notice. Weekends and the Easter holiday are the exceptions: Easter is a high-impact holiday in Switzerland, with shops closed on Good Friday and Easter Monday in most cantons, and trains and lake towns busy.

Restaurants, museums and trams are rarely crowded. The trade-off is that some seasonal businesses — boat schedules, mountain lifts, lakeside cafés — run reduced hours or are closed for maintenance, and a few attractions use April for their annual break. Check opening times for anything specific before you build a day around it.

If you are flexible, aim for the second half of the month: warmer, greener, and still cheap.

The month's signature event is Sechseläuten, Zurich's spring festival, held on the third Monday of April. Guild members in historic costume parade through the city, and in the evening a snowman effigy called the Böögg is burned on a pyre at Sechseläutenplatz. Tradition says the faster the head explodes, the better the summer — a piece of local folklore rather than a forecast. Expect crowds around Bellevue and the lake, and a public holiday atmosphere in the afternoon.

Easter falls in late March or April depending on the year; in 2026 it lands in early April. Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays in Zurich, shops close, and many people travel to the mountains for the last ski weekend of the season. Book trains and restaurants ahead if you are in the city over that weekend.

Beyond these, April is quiet on the events calendar: gallery openings, the start of the outdoor café season when the sun appears, and the first asparagus and spring produce in markets.

April suits the city itself. Walk the old town, the Lindenhof viewpoint and the Niederdorf lanes, take the Polybahn up to ETH for the view, and use the trams when it rains. The Kunsthaus, the Landesmuseum and the FIFA Museum are good wet-weather options, and the zoo works in almost any conditions.

For a half-day out, Uetliberg is the obvious climb: the train from Zurich HB takes about 20 minutes and the ridge walk gives you the lake and the Alps on a clear day. Check the webcams first — April cloud can hide everything. A boat on Lake Zurich is pleasant but cold and breezy; the short circular routes are enough.

Day trips by train are the strongest April play. Lucerne is under an hour away, Basel about an hour, and the Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen around 45 minutes. Ticino, two hours south through the Gotthard base tunnel, is often several degrees warmer and in full spring blossom — the best bet if you want sun without flying. Mountain destinations such as Interlaken, Grindelwald and Zermatt are reachable but still in between seasons: lifts partly open, trails largely not.

Pack for two seasons in one week. Layers are the answer: a warm mid-layer, a waterproof shell with a hood, and shoes that handle wet cobblestones. An umbrella is useful but a hooded jacket survives Zurich's wind better.

Bring sunglasses and sunscreen for the Föhn days and for Uetliberg, where you are above the city haze. If you plan any mountain trip, add gloves, a hat and a warmer jacket — high stations can be near freezing even when Zurich is mild.

Swimwear is optional. The lake and the river baths are cold in April; only serious cold-water swimmers go in.

March is colder and greyer, with ski season still running in the mountains and the city quiet. May is the better month for a city-and-lake trip: warmer, greener, cheaper than summer, though many mountain lifts close for maintenance. June brings reliable weather and the start of the hiking season, at higher prices.

If your priority is hiking or swimming, wait for June or later. If your priority is a cheap, quiet city break with long daylight, April works — just bring a rain jacket.
