Zurich in March: what to expect

March is Zurich's transition month. The Plateau fog that sits over the city in December and January has usually broken, and afternoons start to feel like spring, but mornings and evenings stay cold enough for a proper coat. Snow in the city is possible early in the month and rare by the end of it.

Rain is the main variable: expect roughly a third of the month to be wet, often as light drizzle rather than downpours. Sunshine hours climb through the month, and by late March it stays light until around 19:30. The föhn wind can push temperatures well above the averages for a day or two, then drop them back.

March is one of the quietest months in the city. The Christmas market crowds are long gone, the ski crowds are in the mountains, and the summer lake season has not started. You can walk into most museums, restaurants and trams without planning ahead.

Hotel prices sit in the middle of the year's range — cheaper than January and February, more expensive than May and November. The exception is Easter weekend, when Swiss families take a long weekend and city hotels fill. Book that weekend early if your dates land on it.

Zurich's big street festival, Sechseläuten, falls in April, not March, so the city calendar is thin. What March does bring is the tail of the ski season in the mountains and the start of the cultural season in town.

Easter is the one date to plan around. In 2027 it runs 26–29 March: Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays in most cantons, shops close, and trains to the mountains and Lake Geneva fill up.

Use Zurich as a city base and take one mountain day. The old town, the lake promenades and the Kunsthaus and Landesmuseum are all comfortable in March weather, and the covered arcades in the Niederdorf make a rainy afternoon easy.

For snow, head up rather than out: the Plateau can be grey while the Alps are sunny above the fog line. A day trip by train to a mountain resort is the standard March move, and the ski season in the Alps runs into April. Lake cruises run on a reduced winter timetable — check before you build a day around one.

Pack for two seasons in one day. A warm mid-layer and a waterproof shell matter more than a heavy coat, because afternoons can reach the low teens while mornings stay near freezing. Comfortable waterproof shoes are the single most useful item — Zurich's cobbles get slick in the rain.

Add a compact umbrella, gloves and a hat for early mornings, sunglasses for the bright days, and a swimsuit only if your hotel has a pool. If you plan a mountain day, add a proper insulating layer: it is significantly colder at altitude than in the city.

February is colder and busier, with school holidays in the mountains and Basel's Fasnacht carnival. April brings Zurich's Sechseläuten festival and the end of the ski season after Easter. May is cheaper and greener but many mountain lifts close for maintenance.
