Wisemans Ferry is a small Hawkesbury River settlement about an hour north-west of Sydney, founded in 1817 around a convict-built road and a free car ferry crossing. There is a pub, a shop, a riverside park and national park walking, but no real town centre and little public transport. Most visitors come for a half or full day; a night makes sense only if you want the river at dawn or a houseboat.

Getting around

A car is the practical way in and around; the Old Northern Road from Sydney takes about an hour. Two free car ferries cross the Hawkesbury 24 hours a day, with no bridge alternative nearby, so holiday-weekend queues are normal. Bus route 672 links Windsor station to Wisemans Ferry in about an hour, but once here you walk or cycle; many 'nearby' sights are several kilometres apart.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet riverside town and generally safe. The real risks are rural: unlit roads with wildlife at dusk, unsupervised river swimming, summer heat and long ferry queues on holiday weekends.
  • No bridge alternative: if a ferry queue is long, you wait.
  • Holiday weekends and summer Sundays back up at the ferry; arrive before 10:00 or after 15:00.
  • Mobile coverage is limited to some networks and patchy in the valley; download maps before you leave Sydney.
