Lawson

Skip Lawson as a base: stay in Katoomba or Leura and ride the train 15–20 min here for the South Lawson waterfall walk.

Lawson is a small Blue Mountains town on the Main Western line, 2,614 people, between Hazelbrook and Bullaburra on the Great Western Highway. It has one pub-hotel, a handful of cafés and a 2 km waterfall circuit that is the real reason to get off the train. Most travellers sleep in Katoomba or Leura and visit Lawson in half a day.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

Lawson is small enough to walk: station to the highway shops is about 5 min. Blue Mountains Transit route 690K links Springwood and Katoomba via the station (check timetable). For the waterfall walk, start at Honour Avenue off the highway. A car helps for the outer trailheads and neighbouring towns.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are cliff edges and wet rock on the waterfall tracks, and cold, dark winter evenings with few people around.
  • Cliff edges and slippery rock near the waterfalls: stay on marked tracks.
  • Trains thin out in the evening; check the last service back to your base.
  • Winter nights drop near freezing; many cafés close by mid-afternoon.
