The Blue Mountains are a sandstone escarpment 100 km west of Sydney, and the visitor core — Katoomba, Echo Point, the Three Sisters, Scenic World, Leura, Wentworth Falls — sits within a few kilometres of one railway line. Trains from Sydney Central run hourly and take about two hours, so a day trip works; one night in Katoomba buys you a sunset and an earlier start the next morning. A car is only needed for the far west (Jenolan Caves, Kanangra Walls) or for stringing together several villages in one day.
