Wentworth Falls

Base here for one night if you want the Blue Mountains' best day walk without Katoomba crowds; two nights if you also want Leura and Blackheath.

Wentworth Falls is a small Blue Mountains town about 100 km west of Sydney, quieter than Katoomba and Leura but with the same cliff country on its doorstep. The falls and the National Pass walking track start about 2 km south of the village, so you can arrive by train, walk from the station and sleep in the same street. Most visitors use it as a one-night stop on a Blue Mountains loop, or as a day trip from Sydney. National Pass and the other cliff tracks open and close with weather and park alerts: check the NSW National Parks site before you travel and again on the morning you walk.

This is a basic guide for Wentworth Falls: no airport-to-bed path, walking clusters or day plans yet. Fares and schedules here are unverified. What this page does cover
Rules in force · 7
  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Entry rules depend on your passport. Full visa guide

Getting around

The village is walkable: station, shops and cafés sit within a few hundred metres. The falls and trailheads are about 2 km south of the village; allow 30 min or more with the climb back. Blue Mountains Transit routes 685 and 690K link Wentworth Falls with Katoomba station; the train runs roughly hourly to Sydney Central. A car makes Leura, Blackheath and Mount Wilson easy, but parking at the falls and the Conservation Hut fills on sunny weekends.

Train one stop west, or 5 min by car

Village shops and cafés; walk details for the Leura Cascades track check against current park alerts.

Train west past Katoomba

Govetts Leap and the Grand Canyon track; a full day if you walk.

Door to door: About 50 min

Train west past Katoomba and Blackheath

Quiet village and lookouts; pairs well with Blackheath. The line continues beyond Mount Victoria, so check the timetable for your return.

Door to door: About 45–60 min

Car only, via the Bells Line of Road

Gardens are best in autumn; no train, so you need your own wheels.

Long for a half-day; worth it only if you are heading further west.

On the way back to Sydney rather than a destination in itself.

Door to door: About 1 h 10 min

Village centre (Station St and Great Western Highway)

Walk to the station, cafés and the start of the falls track; best if you arrive by train.

Fletcher St / Conservation Hut end

Closest to the cliff-top trailheads and the Conservation Hut café; quieter, needs a car or a walk of a few kilometres. Track access here depends on current park alerts.

Railway Parade and surrounding bush blocks

Larger retreat-style properties and group stays; a few minutes' drive from the station.

Watch out

Safety

A safe, low-crime town; the real risks are cliff edges on unfenced sections of National Pass, slippery steps after rain, and summer bushfire closures. Check park alerts before every walk.
  • National Pass has steep stair sections and unfenced cliff ledges; closed or partly closed after heavy rain — check the NSW National Parks site before you set out.
  • Bushfire risk in summer: check the NSW RFS and National Parks alerts, and follow any total fire ban or park closure.
  • Tracks can be icy and slippery in winter; wear shoes with grip.
  • Friday afternoon and holiday-weekend traffic on the Great Western Highway out of Sydney can add hours.
  • Mobile signal drops in the valley below the cliffs; tell someone your route and expected return.
