Wollombi
Go for one night if you want a quiet Hunter base on the old convict road; skip it as a day trip from Sydney — 2 h each way for a one-street village.
Wollombi is a one-street village of about 190 people at the fork of the convict-built Great North Road, 29 km south-west of Cessnock on Tourist Drive 33. There is no public transport in or out, so plan on a car. Most visitors see the heritage strip, the old courthouse museum and the tavern in an afternoon; the reason to sleep here is the drive itself and the wineries along it.

- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
- Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
- Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
- Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around
Car only. No public transport into Wollombi is confirmed; check before you rely on any coach or taxi service. The village centre is small enough to walk in 10 minutes. Fuel up in Cessnock or Kulnura before you arrive, and treat the last stretch of Tourist Drive 33 as a country road: unsealed shoulders, wildlife at dusk and no lighting.
