Wollombi
Go for one night if you want a quiet Hunter base on the old convict road; skip it as a day trip from Sydney — 2 h each way for a one-street village.
Wollombi is a one-street village of about 190 people at the fork of the convict-built Great North Road, 29 km south-west of Cessnock on Tourist Drive 33. There is no public transport in or out, so plan on a car. Most visitors see the heritage strip, the old courthouse museum and the tavern in an afternoon; the reason to sleep here is the drive itself and the wineries along it.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No public transport in or out is confirmed: without a car you cannot get here.
- Kangaroos and wombats on the road at dawn and dusk; slow down on Tourist Drive 33.
- Mobile coverage is patchy in the valley; download your map before you leave Cessnock.
- Many cellar doors and the tavern run shorter hours or close midweek: check before you drive out.
- Fuel and groceries are limited in the village; fill up and shop in Cessnock.
Very low crime in a village of about 190 people. The real risks are the drive — kangaroos and wombats at dusk, unlit country roads — and summer bushfire weather: call 000 in an emergency and follow official fire updates before you set out.
