It replaced the 144-hour rule in December 2024, which some older pages still quote. Use the transit lane at immigration, show the onward ticket, and check the current nationality list. Hong Kong and Macau count as separate regions; check whether your ticket qualifies.
  • China ↗Foreign visitors must register their address with the police within 24 hours; hotels do it at check-in with your passport. Carry the original passport at all times: hotels, trains, museums, Tiananmen Square and police checks ask for it.
  • China ↗Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before you fly. QR payment is the default in shops, taxis and many stalls, and some places refuse cash or a foreign card. Carry cash as a backup.
  • China ↗Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and many news sites are blocked. Use an eSIM with roaming (it routes through your home network) or install and test a VPN before you fly; VPN sites and app stores are hard to reach inside China, and only government-approved VPNs are officially permitted.

Wenzhou is Zhejiang's third city and one of its richest, a port and manufacturing hub (spectacles, shoes) rather than a tour stop. The draw is the river island of Jiangxin, the old pedestrian streets, seafood cooking and the mountain and island country beyond the city. English is thin outside hotels, so plan on a translation app.

Getting around

Metro Line S1 links the airport, the two main railway stations and the centre; Line S2 runs north–south through Yueqing and Rui'an and meets S1 at Lingkun. City buses cost ¥1.5–2.5 and are cheap but slow to decode. Taxis start at ¥11 for the first 4 km; drivers change shifts around 16:30–18:00, when it is hard to get one. Ferries cross the Oujiang to Jiangxin Island and to Oubei.

Watch out

Safety

Wenzhou is a safe, ordinary Chinese city; the real risks are typhoon-season weather, taxi fares off the meter and the language gap. Carry your passport, keep a Chinese address card and use 110/120 if needed.
  • Typhoons and heavy rain hit Jul–Sep; check forecasts and rail status before coastal or island days.
  • Taxi drivers may refuse the meter in rain or at rush hour: agree the fare first and do not pay over ¥12 (≈ US$2) for a short city hop.
  • Few people speak English outside hotels; have addresses in Chinese characters.
  • Some attractions close for rebuilding without notice: check the official site the day before.
