Wenzhou is Zhejiang's third city and one of its richest, a port and manufacturing hub (spectacles, shoes) rather than a tour stop. The draw is the river island of Jiangxin, the old pedestrian streets, seafood cooking and the mountain and island country beyond the city. English is thin outside hotels, so plan on a translation app.

Scams and watch-outs

- Few people speak English outside hotels; have addresses in Chinese characters.
- Some attractions close for rebuilding without notice: check the official site the day before.
Wenzhou is a safe, ordinary Chinese city; the real risks are typhoon-season weather, taxi fares off the meter and the language gap. Carry your passport, keep a Chinese address card and use 110/120 if needed.
