Wallis and Futuna is a French overseas collectivity with three customary kingdoms (Uvea on Wallis, and Alo and Sigave on Futuna) that sit alongside the French administration. France sets the entry rules, outside the Schengen area. Tourism barely exists: a few guesthouses, no tour industry, few flights, and French and Wallisian or Futunan as the languages. It suits travellers who plan around the flights and bring cash.

  • French is widely spoken; learn a greeting in Wallisian (Mālō te ma'uli) or Futunan.

Safety

  • Medical care is basic; serious cases are evacuated to Nouméa, so carry insurance with evacuation cover.
  • Lagoon passes have strong currents; swim only with local advice.
  • Cyclones (Nov–Apr): follow official warnings; flights stop.
  • Drive on the right; roads are narrow and unlit at night.

Wallis and Futuna connects through Nouméa and Nadi on Aircalin; Fiji, Samoa and Tonga are its nearest neighbours.
