Vietnam in May: what to expect

May is the month Vietnam's three climate zones pull apart. The centre is the winner: Đà Nẵng, Hội An and Quy Nhơn sit in their dry, sunny window before the September–November storm season, with warm sea and little rain. The north is already summer — hot, humid and hazy, with the first afternoon thunderstorms of the season and a rising chance that a Hạ Long cruise gets a weather warning. The south flips into its wet season: still hot, but expect a heavy downpour most afternoons, usually lasting one to two hours rather than all day.

The practical effect is that a single north-to-south itinerary in May means packing for three different trips. Sa Pa and the far northern mountains are cooler than Hanoi but often cloudy and wet; the Central Highlands around Đà Lạt and Buôn Ma Thuột are mild and showery.

May sits in the middle band for both crowds and prices. It is not a Vietnamese school-holiday month, so domestic beach traffic is lighter than in June, July or August, and international demand has not yet peaked. The exception is the 30 April – 1 May long weekend, when Reunification Day and Labour Day combine: coastal towns, Hạ Long and Phú Quốc fill with domestic travellers, flights and trains sell out, and hotel rates spike for three or four nights. If your dates overlap, book transport and beds weeks ahead.

Outside that window, walk-up rates in Hội An, Đà Nẵng and Quy Nhơn are reasonable, and Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City hotels are easy to book at short notice. Rain in the south occasionally pushes last-minute discounts on Phú Quốc resorts.

May's calendar is dominated by the 30 April – 1 May double holiday, which runs into the first days of the month. Expect fireworks and street events in the big cities, closed offices, and heavy domestic travel. Beyond that, May has no nationwide festival of its own; most activity is local temple and village events, plus the run-up to the summer tourist season on the coast.

Build the trip around the centre. Đà Nẵng, Hội An and Quy Nhơn are at their most reliable in May: dry days, warm water and a coastline that will be far less pleasant by October. Hội An's old town is walkable in the evening heat, and the Hai Van Pass between Huế and Đà Nẵng is usually clear.

In the north, keep Hanoi and Ninh Bình but treat Hạ Long and Sa Pa as weather-dependent — build in a spare day. In the south, Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong work fine if you plan sightseeing for the morning and accept a wet late afternoon; Phú Quốc is warm but showery.

Pack for heat and rain at the same time. Light, quick-drying clothing, a compact umbrella or rain shell, and sandals that survive a flooded street cover the south and the north. For the centre, add swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen and a hat. If Sa Pa or Hà Giang is on the plan, bring a light fleece and a waterproof layer — mountain evenings are cool even in May.

April is the better all-round month if you want the whole country: warm and dry in most places, though the 30 April – 1 May weekend already fills the coast. June pushes the north into humid summer and brings Vietnamese school holidays to the beaches, so crowds rise while the centre stays good. July keeps the centre dry but the north turns stormy and Hạ Long cruises can cancel.
