Vietnam in April: what to expect

April is the handover month. The northeast monsoon is finished, the summer heat has not yet locked in, and most of the country sits in a comfortable band. It is the last month before the centre's beach season turns genuinely hot and the south's rains arrive in force.

The north (Hanoi, Hạ Long, Ninh Bình) climbs out of the grey drizzle of February and March: expect 24–30 °C by day, cooler nights, and a few hazy or drizzly mornings early in the month. Sa Pa and Ha Giang are pleasant by day but still cold at night — a jacket is worth packing. The centre (Huế, Đà Nẵng, Hội An, Quy Nhơn) is the standout: dry, sunny, 26–32 °C, with the sea warm enough to swim. The south (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong, Phú Quốc) is hot and humid at 26–35 °C, with the first scattered afternoon showers of the approaching wet season — usually short and rarely a lost day.

For most of April you are travelling in a medium season: hotel rates are normal, Hội An and Huế are busy but not packed, and you can usually book a day or two ahead. That changes sharply at the end of the month.

The 30 April–1 May long weekend (Reunification Day plus Labour Day) is one of Vietnam's biggest domestic travel weekends. Beach towns, Hạ Long cruises and Phú Quốc fill up, domestic flights and trains sell out, and prices jump. If your dates are fixed over that window, book transport and beds several weeks ahead; if they are flexible, travel in the first three weeks of April and you get the same weather with far less competition.

April has two public holidays, and the second one reshapes the whole travel month.

Hùng Kings' Day falls on the 10th day of the 3rd lunar month — around 16 April in 2027, so check the exact date for your year. It honours the Hùng kings at the temple complex in Phú Thọ province, north-west of Hanoi; the site gets very crowded with pilgrims, and domestic flights are busier around the long weekend. Reunification Day (30 April) and Labour Day (1 May) combine into a two-day national holiday: expect beach towns and Hạ Long to be fully booked, and book transport early. Beyond the holidays, April is a quiet month for festivals — the big lantern and Tết events are behind you.

April suits a north-to-south route better than almost any other month, because all three regions are usable at once.

Start in the north while it is still mild: Hanoi, Ninh Bình and a Hạ Long overnight are all comfortable, and Sa Pa or Ha Giang work if you accept cold nights. Move to the centre for the beach half of the trip — Đà Nẵng, Hội An and Huế are dry and sunny, and Quy Nhơn is a quieter alternative on the same coast. Finish in the south: Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta and Phú Quốc are hot, so plan sightseeing for the morning and pool or beach time for the afternoon.

Pack for two climates if you are crossing regions. Light, breathable clothing for the centre and south; a light jacket or fleece for Hanoi evenings and a warmer layer if Sa Pa or Ha Giang are on the route. A rain shell is useful for the north's early-month drizzle and the south's first afternoon showers.

Sun protection matters more than you expect in April: hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen for the centre's beaches. Bring mosquito repellent for the Mekong and Phú Quốc, and comfortable walking shoes for old-town streets. See the packing list for a full checklist.

March is cooler in the north and slightly wetter in the centre; May turns hot in Hanoi and Saigon but keeps the central coast at its beach best. If April's long-weekend crowds are a problem, late March or early May give you similar weather with fewer domestic travellers.
