Vietnam in July: what to expect

July splits Vietnam three ways. The north is in its humid summer: Hanoi runs hot and sticky with heavy showers and thunderstorms, and the same weather reaches Hạ Long Bay, where operators cancel overnight cruises when a storm warning is issued. Sa Pa is cooler than the lowlands but still wet.

The centre is the pick of the month. Đà Nẵng, Hội An and Quy Nhơn sit in a hot, largely dry window before the September–November monsoon, with sea temperatures that suit swimming. Expect strong midday sun rather than all-day rain.

The south is in the wet season that runs May–November: hot, humid, and usually a 1–2 hour downpour in the afternoon rather than a washed-out day. Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta and Phú Quốc all follow that pattern. Treat the numbers below as 2026 estimates and check a forecast before you fly.

July is high season for Vietnamese families, because school holidays run through the month. Beach towns in the centre and on Phú Quốc fill at weekends, and domestic flights and trains between Hanoi, Đà Nẵng and Ho Chi Minh City sell out earlier than in spring.

Prices are mid-range rather than peak: hotel rates in the centre rise on weekends but stay below the Tết and Christmas–New Year spikes. Book Hạ Long cruises and any internal flight at least a few weeks ahead, and keep a spare day around a Hạ Long night in case a storm cancels it.

There are no national public holidays in July, so shops, museums and transport run normally. Events are local and worth checking dates for: many coastal towns hold summer sea festivals, and the Đà Nẵng international fireworks festival usually runs on weekend evenings in June and July — confirm the 2027 schedule before planning around it.

Elsewhere, July is a month of ordinary summer life: evening food streets, beach weekends and school-holiday crowds rather than fixed festivals.

Build the trip around the centre. Đà Nẵng gives you a city beach and easy access to Hội An, Huế and the Hải Vân Pass; Quy Nhơn is quieter and cheaper for a beach stay. Both are in their dry window this month.

In the south, Ho Chi Minh City works well if you plan around afternoon rain: museums and cafés at midday, streets and markets in the evening. Phú Quốc and the Mekong Delta are viable too, with the same afternoon-shower pattern.

Treat the north as a gamble. Hanoi is still worth two or three days for the Old Quarter, but keep Hạ Long flexible and consider Ninh Bình or a short Sa Pa trip instead of a fixed cruise. If the north is your priority, look at Vietnam in September or October instead.

Pack for heat and water. Light, quick-drying clothes, a compact umbrella or rain shell, sandals that survive a wet street, high-factor sunscreen and insect repellent cover most of the trip. Add a light layer for air-conditioned buses, trains and cafés.

For the north, add a dry bag or plastic sleeve for electronics and a spare day's clothing in your hand luggage if you are flying to a cruise. For the centre, a hat and refillable water bottle matter more than a rain jacket.

June is similar but slightly less wet in the south and less storm-prone in the north. August is the storm peak in the north, so if you want Hạ Long, July and August are both risky and September is better late in the month.
