Getting around Victoria: public transport, passes and taxis

Victoria sits on Mahé's east coast, with the bus terminal, the inter-island ferry quay and the Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market all within a few minutes of each other. The table below covers what you will realistically use.

The centre is compact: the clock tower, the market, the Hindu temple, the botanical garden and the waterfront are all within roughly 1.5 km, and the walk between them takes 10–30 minutes depending on how often you stop. Pavements exist on the main streets but are narrow in places, and traffic in the one-way grid can be brisk.

Walking is the default for a half-day in town. It also solves the Sunday problem: shops close Saturday afternoon and Sunday, and Victoria is quiet on Sundays, so there is little reason to pay for a ride into a shut-down centre. If you are staying at Beau Vallon, the coastal walk into town is long and hot — take the bus or a taxi instead.

SPTC runs the public network on Mahé, and Victoria's bus terminal is the hub for routes along the coast, including the run to Beau Vallon. Buses are cheap, frequent in daylight and scenic, but they are not built around luggage or tight schedules.

Fares are low — SCR 12–25 per ride, with tourists sometimes charged more (check). Pay the conductor or driver in cash with exact change; card readers are not standard. Services are crowded at school times and stop early evening, so an evening out usually means a taxi back. No tourist transit pass is sold; you pay per ride.

Taxis wait at the airport, the ferry quay and around the market. They are metered in theory but often quoted as a flat price, so agree the fare before you get in. Airport to Beau Vallon is about 30 minutes and €35–60; a short hop inside Victoria should be far less.

Ride-hailing apps have limited coverage in Seychelles and cannot be relied on the way they can in Europe or North America. Treat taxis as the fallback for evenings, luggage and early ferry departures, and ask your hotel to call one rather than waiting on the street. For a full day of beaches, a hire car usually costs less than several taxi legs.

A hire car is the best way to explore Mahé beyond Victoria: €45–70 a day, driving on the left, on steep and narrow roads with deep roadside drains. Book ahead in high season and check whether your licence and insurance are accepted before you commit.

For Praslin and La Digue, ferries leave from Victoria's inter-island quay. Mahé → Praslin takes about 1 hour and costs roughly €60–75 one way; Praslin → La Digue is 15 minutes at €15–20 (check). Sailings are daytime only, with the last departures mid-afternoon, and crossings get rough in the trade-wind season — sit low and at the back if you are prone to seasickness. A domestic flight to Praslin takes 15 minutes for €80–120 one way, with strict baggage limits; La Digue has no airport.

A day of walking in Victoria costs nothing. A bus-based day is a few euros at most. A taxi-based day, or a hire car, is where the money goes — budget €45–70 for a car and fuel, or €35–60 per longer taxi leg. Inter-island travel is the biggest single transport cost of a Seychelles trip, so build it into your plan before you book accommodation.

Plan around the clock. Buses stop early evening, shops shut Saturday afternoon and Sunday, and ferries sail only in daylight with the last departures mid-afternoon. If your day depends on a connection, check the last departure the morning you travel.
