Best time to visit Victoria: weather, crowds and events by month

Victoria is a working capital on Mahé's east coast, not a beach resort, so the season question is really about the island: sea state for ferries and diving, rain for sightseeing, and hotel prices. The table below matches the country-level month verdicts to what you would actually do in and around Victoria.

Seychelles has two monsoon seasons rather than four. From December to March the north-west monsoon brings humid air and short heavy showers, often overnight; the south-east coast of Mahé stays calmer for swimming. From May to September the south-east trades blow steadily, drying the air but whipping up the sea. Inter-island ferries between Mahé, Praslin and La Digue can be rough in July and August, and south-east-facing beaches collect seaweed. April–May and October–November are the transition windows: light wind, flat water, and the clearest diving visibility of the year.

For Victoria specifically, rain rarely ruins a day. The town's sights — the Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market, the Hindu temple, the botanical garden and the small history museum — are compact and mostly indoors or under cover, so a wet morning costs you little. The bigger seasonal effect is on what you do after: a Beau Vallon beach afternoon, a boat trip to Ste Anne or Moyenne, or a ferry onward to Praslin. Those depend on wind and sea state, which is why the calm months matter more than the rain gauge.

Daylight is steady year-round, roughly 6am to 6.30pm, so there is no short-day season to plan around. Humidity is highest in January and February, which is when mosquitoes are most active; bring repellent in those months.

Seychelles is an expensive destination in any month, and the spread between low and peak season is narrower than in Europe or the Caribbean. Expect hotel rates to rise noticeably for Easter, August, late October and the Christmas–New Year fortnight, and to be at their softest in February, March and June. Airfares follow the same pattern, with December and August the priciest. All figures below are 2026 estimates and should be treated as bands, not quotes.

Book inter-island ferries before you fly if you are travelling in August, around 15 August (Assumption, when La Digue ferries sell out), or over Christmas and New Year. Outside those windows you can usually book a day or two ahead.

If your dates are fixed to the windy months, plan around the wind rather than cancelling: stay on the sheltered north-west coast, use Beau Vallon for swimming, and treat the south-east beaches as walking rather than swimming beaches. Hiking in the Morne Seychellois National Park is actually more comfortable in the trade-wind months because the air is drier.

For diving and snorkelling, aim for April–May or October–November. Visibility is best in the calm transitions, and several operators run whale-shark trips off Mahé's west coast in October and November (check with operators locally, as sightings vary by year).

Public holidays close some shops and offices in Victoria but rarely affect beaches, and the market usually runs a reduced schedule on public holidays. If a cruise ship is in port, the market and town centre are noticeably busier for a few hours.
