Tonga is the only Pacific kingdom, some 170 islands in four main groups: Tongatapu with the capital Nuku'alofa and the international airport, 'Eua, Ha'apai and Vava'u. Domestic flights and ferries link them and can be disrupted by weather. The constitution makes Sunday a day of rest: most businesses, flights and tours stop. The 2022 Hunga Tonga eruption and tsunami are a reminder that the islands are volcanic and cyclone-exposed.

Country rules
- Many passports receive a visitor permit on arrival with an onward ticket, but rules vary: check the Tonga immigration authorities for your passport before booking.
- By law, Sunday is a day of rest: most shops, tours, domestic flights and boats do not operate, and swimming or working in public may be frowned upon.
- Whale swimming (July–October) is licensed: go only with a licensed operator and follow their rules on approach and group size.
Etiquette
- Mālō e lelei is the greeting.
- Dress modestly in public: shoulders and knees covered, no swimwear or bare chests away from the beach; it is also a legal expectation.
- Respect the monarchy and nobility.
- Church services on Sunday are open to respectful visitors in modest dress.

Money & passes
Cash necessity: 4/5
- Currency is the pa'anga (TOP, T$). Cards are accepted at hotels and some restaurants, often with a surcharge; markets, taxis and small shops are cash.
- ATMs are in Nuku'alofa and Neiafu; Ha'apai and 'Eua have very few, so bring cash.
- Tipping is not customary.

Safety
- Cyclones (Nov–Apr) and tsunamis: know evacuation routes, especially on low islands.
- Reef and blowhole areas: waves surge suddenly; keep back from edges.
- Dogs roam freely and can be aggressive; keep your distance, especially at night.
- Medical care is basic; carry insurance with evacuation cover.
- Dengue occurs; use repellent.
Tonga connects to Auckland, Sydney, Brisbane and Nadi; Samoa and Niue are nearby but reached on separate flights.
