Taipei nightlife: best areas, bars and safety tips

Taipei's night splits into three easy pieces: night markets for eating, bar streets for drinking, and karaoke or hot springs for the late hours. You do not need a car for any of it — the MRT covers the main areas, and taxis are cheap after midnight.

For a first night, eat at a night market, then walk or ride one or two stops to a bar street. For a group night, book a karaoke room. For a quiet night, a hillside hot spring in Beitou beats any bar.

Night markets are the cheapest night out: NT$200–400 buys a full dinner of several small dishes. Bars run NT$200–400 for a local beer or a simple cocktail, more at hotel bars. Karaoke is priced per room or per person for a block of hours, so a group of four usually pays less each than a solo drinker.

Most night markets wind down between 23:00 and midnight, and some stalls close earlier on weekdays. Bars often run to 02:00, and a few clubs later. Public hot springs close in the evening, so go before 22:00. Hours shift with the season and the day, so confirm before a long trip across town.

The MRT is the backbone of a Taipei night. Trains are frequent and cheap, and every area above sits within a short walk of a station. The last trains leave around midnight, so plan your final move before then or switch to a taxi.

Taxis are metered and easy to find outside night markets and bar streets; a cross-town ride at night is usually a few hundred NT$. Buses run some night routes. If you are out past 02:00, a taxi is the simple answer. Confirm last-train times on the day.

Taipei is a low-risk city at night, but the usual rules apply: watch your bag in crowded night markets, agree the taxi meter or use an app, and keep an eye on your drink in clubs. Scams are rare; overcharging is the main risk, and it is easy to avoid by paying the posted price.

Carry some cash for night markets, since many stalls do not take cards. Bring a light jacket for the riverside and the hills, where it is cooler than downtown. If you drink, eat first — night market food is cheap and it keeps the night going.

October to December and March to April are the most comfortable months for a night out: mild, often dry, and good for walking between areas. Summer nights are hot and humid, with afternoon showers that can linger into the evening; winter nights are cool and sometimes wet, which is when hot springs and karaoke make more sense.

Weekends are busiest at night markets and bars, so go on a weekday for shorter queues. Check for public holidays and festival dates, when some places close and others get crowded.
