Where to stay in Taipei: best neighborhoods and hotels

Stay in Zhongzheng around Taipei Main Station if you want the easiest transport hub, or in Ximending if you want shops and street food at your door. Both are central and both sit on the MRT (check), which makes a 4–5 night first trip simple.

If you would rather sleep somewhere quieter, Da'an gives you cafés, parks and a more local feel while staying central by MRT (check). Choose Xinyi only if shopping and skyline views matter more than price. Choose Beitou if a hot-spring soak at the end of each day is the point of the trip.

Zhongzheng is the practical choice. Taipei Main Station connects several MRT lines plus the Taoyuan Airport MRT (check), so you can reach much of the city without changing trains and get to the airport without a taxi. The trade-off is that the immediate streets are business-like and quiet after dark; walk to Ximending or Ningxia Night Market for food (check).

Ximending is the opposite: pedestrian streets, cinemas, shops and snacks until late, with Ximen station on two lines (check). Rooms tend to be smaller and street noise is real, so ask for a high floor away from the main pedestrian zone if you sleep lightly.

Da'an suits travellers who want to come back to a calm street, a park and a good coffee. It is still central — Yongkang Street for food, Daan Forest Park for a walk (check) — and the Brown and Red lines make connections easy.

Xinyi is Taipei's modern core: Taipei 101, department stores, bars with views. It costs more and feels less like a neighbourhood, but if you are here for shopping or work it saves time.

Beitou, in the north, is a hot-spring district with public baths and hotels that pipe thermal water into the room (check). It is a good base only if you accept the ride into the centre; many travellers instead spend one night here and the rest in town.

Taipei is cheaper than Tokyo, Seoul or Singapore for the same standard of room. Hostels and guesthouses are plentiful; mid-range business hotels are the best value; international five-star properties cluster in Xinyi and around Taipei Main Station.

Book early for weekends and around Lunar New Year, when domestic travel fills city hotels and rates jump. If you are arriving late, a hotel near Taipei Main Station or on the airport MRT line saves an expensive taxi — but check the last train time on the day, as the airport MRT does not run all night (check).

Check whether your room has a window — some budget city hotels do not — and confirm the check-in time with your booking, since Taipei hotels vary and many start in the mid-afternoon (check). A stored bag before check-in is normal.
