Best areas to stay in Taipei by traveller type

Taipei is compact and the MRT is cheap, so the area you sleep in matters less than in most capitals. Pick by what you want within a five-minute walk at night: station access, a park, bars, or a hot-spring soak.

Zhongzheng around Taipei Main Station is the default for a first trip. The airport MRT, the high-speed rail to Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung, and two MRT lines all meet here, so day trips and luggage moves are simple. It is businesslike rather than pretty, but the night markets at Ningxia and Huaxi are walkable.

Da'an suits families and slower trips: Da'an Forest Park, quiet lanes, cafés and the Yongkang Street food cluster, with two MRT lines crossing the district. Xinyi is the modern centre — Taipei 101, department stores, cinemas and bars — and costs the most. Zhongshan mixes design shops, cafés and the bar streets around Linsen North Road. Wanhua (Ximending) is the cheapest and busiest, good for solo travellers and nightlife, rougher at the edges. Beitou, north on the red line, is for a hot-spring night rather than a whole trip.

All six areas sit on the MRT, so you can change base without a taxi. Taipei Main Station is the hub: the airport MRT, the red and blue lines and the high-speed rail converge there. Da'an is two stops south on the red line or three on the brown line from the centre. Xinyi is the eastern end of the red line plus the brown line. Zhongshan is one stop north of the main station on the red line. Wanhua (Ximending) is one stop west on the blue line. Beitou is the northern end of the red line.

Book around the calendar. Lunar New Year and long weekends fill hotels and raise rates; weekdays outside holidays are the cheapest. Hotel prices in Taipei are moderate by East Asian standards but rise fast for Xinyi during trade shows.

Stay within a five-minute walk of an MRT entrance rather than exactly at a landmark; that single rule usually beats choosing between districts. If you land at Taoyuan after about 23:00, check the last airport MRT departure before booking a hotel far from Taipei Main Station, or plan a taxi.

For a two-base trip, keep the first and last nights near Taipei Main Station and put a Beitou hot-spring night in the middle. Solo travellers and budget trips are easiest in Wanhua and around the main station; families should weigh Da'an's park and quiet against Xinyi's space and price.
