The routes, step by step
Seven days: land at Bandaranaike (CMB) and sleep in Colombo or Negombo, whichever side of the airport suits your arrival time. Next morning go to Kandy for two nights: Temple of the Tooth, the lake, and a slow afternoon. Take the hill train to Ella if seats are available (check), otherwise the car. Two nights in Ella covers Little Adam's Peak and the Nine Arches Bridge. Then drive to Galle, 4–5 hours via Udawalawe if you want a half-day safari, and finish with two nights inside or beside the fort.
Ten days adds the Cultural Triangle. Sleep in Negombo on arrival, then Sigiriya for two nights as a base for the rock and Dambulla, then Kandy, Ella, one night at Tissamaharama for a Yala game drive, and two nights in Galle. This is the classic loop and the version most first-timers should book.
Fourteen days lets you stop properly. Negombo 1, Anuradhapura 1, Sigiriya 2, Kandy 2, Nuwara Eliya 1, Ella 2, Tissamaharama 1, Mirissa 2, Galle 1, Colombo 1. Swap Mirissa for Trincomalee or Arugam Bay if you travel May–September.
Three weeks: keep the 14-day loop and add either Jaffna for two or three nights in the north, or a longer east-coast stay. Do not try to do both coasts in one trip; the drive between them eats days.

Notes that change the plan
Monsoon decides the coast, not the calendar. December–April: south and west. May–September: east. If your dates are fixed, choose the coast first and build the loop backwards.
Trains are scenic but slow, and the Kandy–Ella leg is the one people want. Book ahead or accept a car; a car and driver also solves the last-mile problem at every stop. Buses are cheapest and slowest.
Keep the final night within two hours of the airport. A late Galle-to-CMB transfer on departure day is the most common way travellers miss a flight.
Check the ETA route before booking anything, and check the train timetable close to your date; both change.
