Where to stay in Sri Lanka: best areas and types of hotel

Choose your base by month first, then by town. From November to April the south and west coasts work: Galle Fort for a walkable, walled base with restaurants, Unawatuna or Mirissa for sand and surf. From May to September the east coast takes over, with Trincomalee as the main base.

For the interior, Kandy is the natural two-night stop before the hill train, and Sigiriya or Habarana puts you within day-trip range of the Cultural Triangle. Most travellers keep Colombo to one night at the start or end, near the airport road or in Colombo 03 and 07.

South coast. Galle Fort is the most convenient base if you want to walk to dinner: guesthouses and small hotels sit inside the walls, and the fort is a short tuk-tuk ride from Unawatuna beach. Unawatuna and Mirissa are beach-first choices, with more mid-range rooms and easier parking; Mirissa adds whale-watching boats and surf schools in season.

Hill country. Kandy has the widest choice of hotels and is the practical stop before the train to Ella. Ella itself is small, so book early in season; rooms near the station or along the main road are walkable, while hillside places need a tuk-tuk. Nuwara Eliya suits one or two nights for tea estates and Horton Plains, and it is cold at night — check that your room has heating.

Cultural Triangle. Sigiriya village has the closest rooms to the rock, but Habarana and Dambulla give more choice and easier access to Polonnaruwa and Minneriya. Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa are quieter bases if you want to start early at the ruins.

North and east. Trincomalee is the main east-coast base, with beach guesthouses at Uppuveli and Nilaveli. Jaffna has a smaller, mostly guesthouse-style market and is best booked ahead in season.

Sri Lanka's accommodation splits into four practical tiers. Guesthouses and homestays are the default for independent travellers: a room in a family house, often with breakfast, sometimes with a fan rather than air conditioning. Mid-range hotels and boutique villas add a pool and reliable hot water. Colombo and the forts have business and heritage hotels, and the coast has larger resorts.

Prices move with season and with the rupee. Treat the bands below as 2026 estimates and confirm on booking; the south coast can double in the last week of December.

Book the south coast and hill country four to eight weeks ahead for December to February, and earlier for the last week of December and the first week of January, when the best guesthouses sell out. The April New Year holiday and the Kandy Esala Perahera also fill rooms in Kandy and the hill country.

Outside peak weeks you can often book a few days ahead, but the good small places in Ella, Mirissa and Galle Fort have few rooms, so a short list booked early beats arriving and hoping. If your trip depends on one specific train or safari, fix those dates first and build the rooms around them.

Power is 230 V with type D, G and M sockets, so bring a universal adapter. Many guesthouses have fans and occasional outages; a small power bank helps.

Pay in Sri Lankan rupees. City hotels and fort properties take cards, but smaller guesthouses often prefer cash, and some add a card fee. Keep small notes for tuk-tuks and tips; a 10% service charge is common in hotels.

Check what is included: breakfast, airport transfer and air conditioning are the three items that change the bill most. If you are arriving late, a first night near the airport or in Colombo is easier than a long drive in the dark.
